Our next stop is the town of Pompeii. The city of Pompeii is located a few miles away from Naples. The town was then captured by the Romans in 80 BC. The population in the town was about 20,000. The town was also very advanced with villas for all the people living there, a complex water system, an amphitheater, a gymnasium, and a port. One of the things Pompeii was well known for was their volcano; Mt. Vesuvius. The famous eruption that ended Pompeii was in 79 AD. When the volcano erupted, it laid a thick layer of volcanic ash covering the entire town and all the people. Hundreds of years later, the town was found. Here in Pompeii, as you walk around the town you can see all the ways of life in the past. Its also very interesting because all of the people in the town are still there were they were laying when the volcano erupted, all covered in ash. The town of Pompeii was one of the great contributors to Rome's great reign and Golden Age. Pompeii helped the city of Rome with many of the accomplishments that people know Rome as today. Pompeii is very important because all or most of the city was preserved so that scientists could tell about the earlier life in Rome and Pompeii. Pompeii also was important because Pompeii did a lot of trading and Rome started to learn from Pompeii.
